Four on Friday...

tennis
1. Last night was my token night of poor sleep (can I hope there's only one per week?). At least today's Friday :)

2. We're supposed to get a storm this weekend. It's still chilly from the unexpected front which came through Wednesday, though I think it's supposed to get up to 60 today. At least the mountains got some snow -- and DH gets to ski this weekend.

3. My MIL is coming in to see D's last game. I'm glad she gets to see a game, but the timing could be better. My FIL is taking the kiddos right after the game (tomorrow afternoon), and DH and I had plans to celebrate our anniversary...I'm not sure what my MIL will do. If we're lucky, they'll just find somewhere else to stay, no?

4. After working with my daughter's class yesterday for math, I will admit that I'm a bit concerned about the direction our district is moving in regards to math...I've never liked the resource our district uses (Investigations -- I know other districts around the country have used it). For a while, though, it looked like they would supplement with other resources to cover some of the holes. But yesterday, I worked with a group of kids (including E) who 'mastered' the pre-test for a new unit and were doing extra work. One of the questions required them to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number -- and they couldn't do it! They've never learned standard multiplication (what I call the 'column' method, and other probably call a standard algorithm). The method they're taught is the 'break-apart' strategy, but that gets pretty complicated as soon as you have large numbers. I vaguely remember having to teach D how to do it (how it can be so vague when it was only two years ago is beyond me!), so I just need to buckle down and teach E the same thing, clearly. *sigh*

Happy Friday :) Any fun weekend plans?

My storm is just starting with flurries. The media is going crazy hyping this storm ... histoic, stock up on everything, power may be out forever ... really creating a panic. Even I am antsy.

LOL ... nothing like having the MIL in the house for an anniversary celebration. Lock her in the guest suite ;o)

I think all the new teaching methods du jour are missing the basics ... like multiplying 12*15... or even learning script. The next generation will sign their name with an X because they can't write (although they are great texting with 2 thumbs). Too many experts and not enough common sense IMHO.

Flurries just accelerated ... yikes!

I hope everyone will be safe -- maybe it'll simply give a bunch of people a nice weekend off (safe in their *warm* homes)!

LOL about writing -- that's frighteningly accurate!

Oh, I can't believe your MIL might crash your anniversary celebration :( DH should tell her that you two were planning a romantic evening without the kids and hopefully she'll get the hint.

Well, she bought us dinner tonight (and it was a very fun time) -- so we'll go out tomorrow night, just the two of us, and deal with the rest later, right? :)
