Me books...

I read this on fabulousfrock's LJ (and Tara's too). I like reading through them, and it made me here's my own attempt.

There are definitely books that I like very much, but 'me' books are the kind I anticipate revisiting almost as soon as I finish. Some of these are popular (like the HP books), but I'm guessing most aren't. :)

'Me' books have these factors:

*romance with a lot of tension (you know, the kind where even though you've read it a hundred times, you still wonder if it'll turn out okay each time) -- ex: Touch Not the Cat, by Mary Stewart; Anne of the Island, by LM Montgomery
*adventure that I couldn't possibly have -- ex: Protector of the Small Quartet, by Tamora Pierce; Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy, by Ally Carter
*sweetness (I don't do edgy; I like my MCs sweet and not snarky) -- ex: By the Highway Home, by Mary Stolz; The Secret Life of Sparrow Delaney, by Suzanne Harper
*philosophical ideas presented in a thoughtful but not wordy or preachy manner (though I realize perception of this will vary depending on the reader, heh) -- ex: Speaker for the Dead, by OSC; The Keeping Days, by Norma Johnston
*something surprising (this is one that's tough -- but I've read enough that very little surprises me; so when something manages to do that, I'm impressed and drawn back to that story repeatedly) -- ex: Shift, by Jennifer Bradbury (surprising because I didn't expect it to be as compelling as it was); vibes, by Amy K. Ryan (surprising because the MC was everything I don't like, but I really liked the book); Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Fannie Flagg (surprising because it's really a collection of vignettes about the south -- not my thing at all -- but I love it!)
*clever books -- The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin (my first clever book, heh); Black is the Color of my True Love's Heart, by Ellis Peters

Of course, the very best books encompass almost all of these (like HP).

This was fun -- feel free to try it also, either on your blog or in the comments :)
