Book Reports (146-147)...

For those of you who happened to Google your title and ended up here, please know that one star is not a bad thing in Robin's world -- just the fact the I picked up your book and started it means that somewhere it's getting good buzz (or that your blurb was really cool). 'R' means it's a re-read. Different colored font means it's an ARC for 2010 (and I'll try to remember to put the month it's released, as well). I'm linking to Tattered Cover's pages for the ARCs.

* I didn't make it beyond the first 20 pages.
** I made it to the end, but I either skimmed or skipped large sections.
*** I might have skipped/skimmed, but I liked it and might read it again.
**** I read at least 95% of the book and it was good -- definitely will be reread.
***** I read every word, and I loved it! A favorite.

Veil of Night, by Linda Howard ***** Yep, I loved this. Howard remains my favorite romantic suspense writer, and although there have been a few 'mehs' over the years, it's rare that I don't at least like it a lot. The story: Jaclyn and her mom run an event planning business, specializing in weddings. But when one of Jaclyn's clients is murdered shortly after she fired Jaclyn (and slapped her across the face), Jaclyn finds herself at odds with the world -- including the sexy cop she had a one-night stand with a couple of nights previously. (Adult romantic suspense, released 8/10, Publisher: Ballantine Books)

Choker, by Elizabeth Woods **+ The main character in this was unusual, and that made me wary to sink into the story. However, I realized later it's an unreliable narrator (which explains a lot), and I'll be curious to see if this is as popular as Liar was. The story (without revealing too much): Cara struggles to find her place in school as the 'popular' girls make her life miserable -- but when her childhood friend returns after moving away, she finds things both better and worse. (YA contemporary/mystery, releases 1/11, publisher: Simon & Schuster -- this was my first eARC, btw)
