* I didn't make it beyond the first 20 pages.
** I made it to the end, but I either skimmed or skipped large sections.
*** I might have skipped/skimmed, but I liked it and might read it again.
**** I read at least 95% of the book and it was good -- definitely will be reread.
***** I read every word, and I loved it! A favorite.
Paranormalcy, by Kiersten White ****+ This is an intriguing mystery, and even though there's still a lot left hanging by the end, I enjoyed getting to know this world. Evie is a neat MC, despite her ignorance and willingness to just go along with things, at first. And Lend is wonderful! I personally liked Evie's innocence and joie de vivre, and that, combined with Lend's sweetness, just made me happy. I'll definitely pick up the next book! The story: Evie works for the IPCA, an international agency which tags and 'helps' paranormals. She seems to be unique -- a human who can see beneath the glamours. But when Lend, the most unique paranormal Evie's ever seen, appears, she can no longer go along with IPCA's standard policy. (YA paranormal mystery, released 8/10, publisher: HarperTeen)
Dead Beautiful, by Yvonne Woon **** Although this seemed slow-going in spots, by the last quarter, I was reading feverishly to discover (along with Renee) the secrets of Gottfried Academy. I had my suspicions sooner than Renee did, so in some ways, she seemed a little slow -- BUT the ending was completely unexpected to me, so I liked that part. I'll look for the next in the series. The story: When Renee's parents suffer a mysterious death (and Renee finds them in the midst of a national forest), she's taken by her grandfather to Gottfried Academy, where her parents attended high school (and fell in love). Once there, she meets the mysterious Dante, a boy whose ice-cold skin cannot keep Renee from their strange attraction which only grows over time. But something strange is going on at Gottfried, and as Renee's friends are threatened, she begins to discover a terrifying reality. (YA urban fantasy/horror, released 9/10, publisher: Hyperion)
