Ashes, Ashes, by Jo Treggiari
Why did I love this? Well, it's dystopic and it's natural disaster (and plague) combined -- what's not to love? Plus, I love Lucy's combination of strength and vulnerability, and her slowly-growing relationship with Aidan adds that hint of romance that I adore -- and there's a good mystery too!
Brain Jack, by Brian Falkner
Why did I love this? I often enjoy male protagonists, and the techno-disaster feel is perfect for my tastes. Sam also is a nice blend of personalities, including his geekiness and an ability to solve problems and lead by example -- not to mention, there's that adventure feel to the whole story (like watching a great action movie).
Divergent, by Veronica Roth
Why did I love this? Since I loved just about everything about this book, I'll try to keep it brief. First, the dystopic world-building was quite well done. Second, Tris was a great heroine who wasn't afraid to risk her emotions as well as her physical health to get what she wants. Third, the romance was lovely.
Forgotten, by Cat Patrick
Why did I love this? It's such an intriguing idea (remembering the future rather than the past), and it's very well done. Add to that a strong and courageous heroine in London and a budding romance which also adds mystery (the one person London can't 'remember' -- and yet, she continues to meet him every day). All in all, a great paranormal story!
Rival, by Sara Bennett Wealer
Why did I love this? Well, it's the only contemporary on the list -- and it's one of only two contemporaries which got a five-star rating this year. Despite missing that paranormal/mystery/dystopic element that I love, it has so many aspects which make a great story: 1) dual-POV; 2) great tension and conflict between the MCs; 3) growth and resolution (but not in a fluffy, unrealistic way); 4) a great topic (music and singing).
For the record, I'm currently reading
Trial by Fire, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes -- and yes, it's just as good as the first book in this series!
How about you? What are some of your favorite reads of the year so far?
