A little character discussion...

Seeing Harry Potter OotP has really turned my thoughts to characters. Really, those books could be called, There's Something About Harry. Because there is. Something about that boy has drawn millions of people to him, people from all walks of life, all ages, all places.

It's made me think of my other favorite characters -- and when it comes down to it, I really only have a few: Harry Potter, Anne Shirley, Ender, Daine, Meg Murray. These characters are real to me, they are friends. Sometimes I think a group of characters, a style of characterization perhaps, can also become friends. I'm thinking of Mary Stewarts heroines here -- not one in particular, but that rush of excitement and energy I get when I read all of them together (which is, of course, how I tend to read my favorite authors).

I think one of the greatest things someday would be to hear that someone, somewhere, listed one of my characters in such a list. Honestly, I'm not sure it will happen -- I don't know if I have that gift for creating memorable characters. If I really push myself, if I continue to grow and work, then perhaps I might join the style of characterization camp. Perhaps.

How about you? Who are your favorite characters?
